An ancient cradle of civilisation, India has more than 1 billion people of different ethnic types and religions, speaking more than 300 language. It has a large variety of agro-climatic zones and soils which produce tobacco types as diverse and rich as its culture.

Introduced in India by the Portuguese in the 17th century, tobacco cultivation has become an industry which has made great strides and has a key role to play in the Indian economy. India is today the world's third leading producer of tobacco with an annual output of 450 million kg. tobacco with righ colour taste and aroma to satisfy the most stringent requirements of any world market.

Virginia flue-cured tobacco is cultivated in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka with a potential of more than 200 million kg output a year. India produces various types of tobaccos ranging from low cost coloury fillers to ripe, rich fillers and flavoury tobaccos to cater to the demanding requirements of select overseas customers. Indian tobacco is appreciated all over the world. Its cultivation has been extended to new potential areas for producing quality tobacco for quality conscious markets.

In 1984 India became the fifth country in the world to introduce open auctions for the sale of the flue-cured tobacco. Every year about 180 million kg is sold by auction. These auctions are held between Feb. and May at 21 Auction Floors located in Andhra Pradesh and Eight Floors in Karnataka. This ensures auctioning of well graded tobaccos of different styles. Moreover for overseas buyers it facilitales the task of choosing selected tobaccos on the floors.

All types of tobacco are generally graded according to the colour, length, blemish and texture of the leaf.

Traditional flue-cured tobacco is primarily graded into 10 farm grades based on colour, texture, body and blemish of the leaf. They are broadly categorished into brights, semi-brights, browns and greens adopted at export level.

Flue-cured tobacco grown in the light soils of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka is graded according to the plant positions along the lines of the International grading system.

Burely tobacco (monsoon crop) is graded according to plant positions.

The Tobacco procured from producers is processed at own processing centres. Processing involves elimination of off-style, hand stripping, tipping of leaves and blending of different styles to meet specific needs.
